In 1987 Zelda II’s fairy spell gave Link the ability to transform into a tiny fairy to fly over pits, reach high locations, and get through small spaces (including keyholes). Link can take damage in this form if he’s hit by an enemy, but he has no means of fighting back, and won’t return to his normal self until you change screens.

Shape shifting has been a pretty big part of the Zelda series if you think about it. What was the first game in which Link transforms into something other than Hylian?
